“@UKGBC: Industry keen to continue the masonry first debate around impacts of materials & design considerations.

It was good to hear the debate sparked by John Alker's piece in Building Magazine last month on material choice, the Hackney wood first policy, and the different viewpoints tabled by industry sectors. However, I must say we have seen and heard much of this before, and we will only get a clearer picture when materials environmental impact information, and the rhetoric around this, is presented based on consistent life cycle assessment (LCA) methods. With the developing CEN/TC350 programme and its recent publications we are perhaps nearing this point. My challenge to the industries would be to step forward with their environmental product declarations (EPD), completed to BS EN 15804:2012 (product level), and better still included in assessments to BS EN 15978:2011 (building level), to see how this plays out in the full building context.
