The Budget: a glimmer of hope amidst the gloom? New blog by @johnalker:

Groundhog Day is the obscure Pennsylvanian tradition where a rodent is coaxed from its winter slumber to predict the weather. I wouldn’t be so rude as to compare George Osborne to a beaver-like burrow-dweller but he does do a pretty good impression of Bill Murray’s character in the film of the same name, waking up every morning in a recurring nightmare. In the Chancellor’s case, he’s stuck in the rut of flatlining growth, rising living costs and that persistent, pesky deficit. Despite something approaching a consensus from a large chunk of the private sector that the green economy represents one of his best chances of getting things moving again, he has time and again chosen to ignore the opportunity staring him in the face.
