Magnetic-Bearing Chillers: Cooling without Friction Chillers are the largest energy consumers in commercial buildings, responsible for nearly a quarter of total energy consumption. Usually found on rooftops or in mechanical rooms, these units are integral parts of complex HVAC systems and are engineered to provide cooling when the building is fully occupied (full load) as well as during periods of low demand (partial load). Not all chillers are created equal, however, and large centrifugal chillers that use magnetic levitation bearings—including Daikin McQuay’s Magnitude, Johnson Controls/TROY’s YMC2, and Multistack’s MagLev—provide better overall energy efficiency than conventional, comparably sized chillers; they also require far less maintenance. ...
