As we reduce the fossil fuel energy use in buildings, the carbon impact of building products becomes ever more relevant. Architecture 2030 issued the 2030 Challenge for Products to drive the innovative use of high-performance products with small carbon footprints. While the transparency tools of the challenge, Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs), are growing in acceptance, we still have much work to do. The largest roadblock is that few EPDs exist because the Architecture/Engineering/Construction and Development community is not asking for them. It is critical that design and Building Sector professionals request transparent, carbon footprint information from product representatives.
