Encouraging Progress on Carbon Reduction

Back in May 2007, major building-design industry groups agreed to a benchmark against which they could measure progress toward their goal of increasing energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions in residential and commercial buildings. That initiative, known as the 2030 Challenge, is supported by the American Institute of Architects, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, a nonprofit group called Architecture 2030 , the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America, and the U.S. Green Building Council. With the benchmark established, these groups were then able to more effectively focus their design expertise on their ultimate goal: producing buildings that, by 2030, will be carbon-neutral.
