phthalates in vinyl-based flooring Posted by Brent Ehrlich on Mar 22, 2012, 01:04 PM Hi Greta, Vinyl tiles still need some plasticizers to give them a little flexibility and keep them from being too brittle and easily damaged...picture a tile chipping or shattering when an object hits it rather than absorbing the shock. The plasticizer does not have to be a phthalate, however. Upofloor uses one derived from castor oil for its phthalate-free vinyl sheet flooring, for instance.
