from Environmental Building News Pollution Concerns Spawn Salmon-Safe Accreditation for Contractors Salmon-Safe's new accreditation program recognizes contractors whose practices minimize runoff and water pollution. By Erin Weaver Land disturbance from construction is a common cause of erosion, leading to turbidity and pollution that degrade water bodies and threaten aquatic species. The nonprofit Salmon-Safe, which has been certifying the land-management practices of farms and other organizations in West Coast watersheds since 1996, is addressing the threat from construction with a more recent accreditation program recognizing contractors who consistently apply best practices for pollution control and zero sediment runoff on all jobsites.
