Government finalises Housing Standards & zero carbon small sites exemption

The new standards, which will come into effect on 1 October 2015, include a new security requirement and optional access and water efficiency standards for homes. A national space standard for homes has also been defined which can be applied through the planning system. As UK-GBC noted last week , the Government has also confirmed an exemption for sites of ten units of fewer, with a maximum floor space of 1000m2, from the Allowable Solutions element of the zero carbon homes standard. The exemption will be reviewed after three years. Louise Sunderland, Senior Sustainability Advisor at UK-GBC , said: “It’s encouraging that these new standards have been introduced before the General Election to give the industry clarity on the transition from the old to the new landscape.
