HPB Case Study: Overview - NASA KSC Building M6-490

The Life Support Facility incorporates sustainable features into the building construction. High efficiency heating and cooling systems were installed in the building to increase energy efficiency throughout the building. The demand control ventilation system, which includes CO2 monitoring sensors, allows the HVAC system to operate optimally based upon occupancy. The HVAC system also improves the indoor environment by allowing for humidity control. The use of photosensors and motion sensors in the building also helped to increase energy efficiency by preventing unnecessary use of lighting. Outdoors, no irrigation is required, thus reducing overall water use. Indoors, low-flow plumbing fixtures have been installed, allowing for an anticipated 30% reduction in potable water use.
