#Socialmedia sparks large spontaneous anti-racism demos in Finland cities @urbanopolista

A beautiful summer afternoon formed the backdrop to a 15,000-strong demonstration against racism and intolerance in Helsinki today. The demonstration was prompted by a racist and xenophobic Facebook post by a member of parliament from the nationalist-populist(-racist) Perussuomalaiset (“True Finns”) party. In the post made over the weekend, MP Olli Immonen said – in English – that he is dreaming of “a strong brave nation that will defeat this nightmare called multiculturalism” and that he “will fight until the end for our homeland and one true Finnish nation.” The statement prompted an immediate backlash on social media, with many considering it borderline fascist, and reminiscent of statements made by the far-right terrorist Anders Breivik, particularly as Immonen’s post came only a few days after neighbouring country Norway marked four years since Breivik massacred 77 pe...
