Tape It? Seal It? Glue It? Sealing Weather Barrier Seams Part 1 in our series on adhesives, sealants, tapes & membranes

I fully agree that, as Dr. Joe is wont to say, physics trumps chemistry - laps and fasteners that work with gravity are far more reliable than tapes and sealants that rely on chemical bonds. And chemistry introduces numerous incompatibilities between adhesives and substrates. However, to start a discussion on weather-sealing products, it's important to begin with correct definitions. Mastic, originally the resin from a Mastic tree, is any thick resinous sealant and they typically dry-set. Non-drying sealants are generically called acoustical sealants or caulks, as they are designed to remain semi-fluid to compensate for substrate movement and shrinkage. Also, caulks are not simply gap fillers, but also meant to seal against water (or air), including the ancient oakum caulks that kept wooden sailing vessels afloat and that sealed our cast iron sewer pipes. Today's synthetic...
