Frank Pasker is nothing if not adaptable. Transplanted from Germany to Southern California more than a decade ago, he immediately seized the opportunity to refine his architectural practice toward sustainable and climate-specific design. “When I arrived here, I saw huge houses with big glazed façades that required a lot of air conditioning,” he recalls. “It was very inappropriate for the climate.” His focus crystallized with Nob Hill Haus, a home he describes as “experimental” not so much for the passive solar principles and energy, water, and other resource efficiencies it employs, but more so to inform himself—and by extension, his clients—about their real-world applications and effectiveness. “It helps me assure them that the performance we design will be met,” he says.
