Newsbrief from Environmental Building News Two Technologies Proven Effective in GSA Test Beds By Erin Weaver Two new federal studies evaluate the performance of advanced power strips and responsive lighting systems. The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) makes use of federal buildings across the country in its Green Proving Ground program, testing technologies for reducing energy use (see “GSA to Use Federal Buildings as Test Bed for Green Technologies ,” EBN June 2011). Currently, plug loads account for approximately 25% of electricity use in office buildings and lighting for 39%. GSA found that advanced power strips with schedule-based power controls reduced workstation plug loads by an average of 26% in the eight buildings in which they were tested.
