'To give people a chance to be together a room must also allow them to be alone'
This is the alcove in the entrance lobby of Gaudi's Casa Batllo in Barcelona, Spain. Gaudi, hated straight lines preferring organic, nonlinear patterns just like todays natural builders . To give people a chance to be together a communal space like a family living room, the room should give them a chance to be alone too. The alcove is a small space on the edge of a room which is large enough for a few people to sit and chat but open to the room so that everyone is still together. The alcove should have a lower ceiling than the rest on the room with sheltering walls to create an intimate space that hides the clutter of its activity like open books, crafts and board games. If you are building a home we recommend you read Alexander's book A Pattern Language .
