From genomic medicine to bioinformatics, the research undertaken at Health Sciences Biomedical Research Facility II (HSBRF) at UC San Diego Health Sciences represents the field’s cutting edge. Yet an underlying master plan for the Health Sciences campus did not allow the new facility itself to embody progressive thinking: It required the building to follow a north–south axis, a highly exposed solar orientation that runs counter to passive sustainability. In creating HSBRF, architect ZGF mitigated this condition as part of a high-performance design poised to earn LEED-Platinum certification.
