Bicycles As Transit in America by @urbanphotosblog

It would be fair to say that most Americans view the bicycle as a tool of either a recreational user or a hardcore sportsman willing to spend thousands on a bike and accessories. Sometimes, we see examples of the marginalized citizen riding an old bike on the side of a dangerous road, or children riding on quiet, country streets. The bike is a sub-cultural feature in this country and not taken seriously as a viable form of transportation. This is a sad narrative of early-21st Century America if one looks at how much our mobility has changed and been restricted since the early 20th century. According to Jeff Speck in his Walkable City, in the early 1900’s, all cities over 10,000 people had streetcar lines, built principally by real estate developers to entice new buyers, and the bicycle was the main form of personal transport, along with walking.
