One of the greatest benefits of intensive bike infrastructure for American cities is that they become safer for all users, including cars and pedestrians, not just cyclists. When downtowns are dominated by acres of parking lots and fat, one-way streets, there are few reasons to go downtown and, therefore, no economic benefit to the city. Economic activity increases downtown when there are plenty of things to see and do, which can be accelerated by traffic calming and bike lanes. By investing relatively modest sums of public funds in high-quality bike infrastructure, cities and communities can create enough perceived and real safety to get people to ride bikes for many trips under three miles.
