Discussion of the building envelope in this article misses key building science, building physics principles. John Straube from the Building Science Corporation tells us that the building enclosure is part of a physical systems involving three interactive components:the exterior (above and below graound),the enclosure system and the interior environments. There are three sub-categories in the building science of the enclosure: the Support Function (accommodates the structural laods -exterior & interior), Control Functions (the flow of mass related to air & moisture and energy (thermal transfer), and the Finish Functions of the enclosure surfaces.
