Why All the Development in the World Doesn’t Matter if You Don’t Know Your Soul

Recently, Politico has written some great articles on cities in the Piedmont region of North Carolina and Southern Virginia. Before I went to Roanoke, one of my good friends sent me this one . Having been at the first CityWorksXPO, I knew some of the story. However, I didn’t know all about how Roanoke brought itself back to light. And again, I am thankful for how this community has taken the bold step of allowing both young people and people of color to take on prominent roles, in government, in art, and on the street corners. I’m also thankful it helped me dig back into one of my premier urban theories—the civic inferiority complex in time to present it at this year’s XPO.
