A recent study conducted in two call centers in China found that air pollution significantly hampered worker productivity. Pollution zaps mental processing abilities, the researchers found, causing employees to take longer breaks on bad air quality days. Dog days in the call center The study analyzed data from almost 5,000 employees that worked in call centers for Ctrip, China’s largest travel agency. Because each worker is compensated in part based on the volume of calls and orders, each worker tracks the number of calls handled per shift and the amount of time that he or she spent on breaks.
